Slab Jacking or Mud Jacking
This method does not require piers of any sort. For foundation applications it is
usually used along with one of the
other pier methods. It's best application is for exterior slabs like driveways and sidewalks.
This method raises the slab by injecting different materials beneath the slab, usually
a special mixture of concrete via a hole drilled through the slab, under high pressure,
effectively floating it back into place.
Slab Jacking works well for areas like driveways, patios and walkways. It should
not be used as the primary method of raising a foundation. It can be used to fill voids
after a foundation has been raised using other methods, but be forewarned that it
can cause additional damage if it is used in the wrong circumstance.
If there is a void beneath the foundation and slab where the soil has receded
because of dry conditions Slab Jacking can cause severe damage when the soil in the
area that was filled becomes moist again.
Under these circumstances the foundation would be forced upward beyond it's normal
elevation possibly causing severe damage. If someone tries to sell you on using
Slab Jacking or Mud Jacking as it is sometimes called, you should give careful
consideration to the danger of doing so.
I never recommend Slab Jacking to my clients as the primary means of correcting
foundation damage because of the above mentioned risks. It is simply not worth it.
Advantages
- Probably fastest method possible
- Almost zero impact on surrounding areas
Disadvantages
- Extremely dangerous, not worth the risk
